VOLCANO · the lake that burns

Volcano Lava Lake

A volcano that is still burning. The crater is a bowl and the lake sits fourteen metres below the rim, so the overview looks straight down into it; the surface is a few summed sines, while a second set of frequencies drives the crust, so it cracks open in patches rather than greying out evenly. Embers rise from the lake and wrap around at the top, ash climbs slower and spreads wider, and the sky is warmed orange at the horizon by the glow below. The crater profile, the swell, the crust and every ember are computed at runtime — no models, no textures.

The crater is a bowl

Ground height is one radial function: flat at the lake floor, rising along the inner wall to the rim, then falling linearly down the outer slope. Every seam lands exactly on a constant — miss by a little and a gap opens between the lake and the rock.

The crust cracks, it does not grey out

The crust is two sets of cosines at different frequencies woven together. With only one, the lake darkens evenly like a fading filter; interleaved, it goes bright here and black there, the way crust actually forms.

It can stop

With reduced motion preferred, the lake settles at its mean height and the embers and ash hang still; what remains is still a volcano you can drag and zoom.
